The Role of Public Research Institutions in the Japanese National Innovation System

Prof. Akira Goto leads this collaborative research projects with Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI). The aim is to investigate the role of public research institutions in the Japan’s National Innovation System especially in the era of “Post Catch-up.” For details, please visit RIETI’s webpage.

Benchmarking of University Research Activities

In collaboration with National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (NISTEP), GIST conducts the quantitative analysis on the university research activities, including the international comparison. The results of the analysis will be used for the short-term training courses for policy makers and practitioners engaging in the science and technology policy, and higher education policy.

Issues in Boundary between Science and Policy

GIST conducts research projects and convenes workshops and study meetings on the issues which occurs in boundary between science and policy. Through these activities, in collaboration with various institutions in Japan and abroad, GIST consolidates the related knowledge and information and feeds the research results back to the policy side.

Related Efforts and Events

Research Projects on the Ways to Promote the Science for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy.

This project is commissioned by MEXT. The aim is to investigate the challenges in 1) Agenda Setting, 2) Scenario and Policy Option Making and 3) Policy Process, and to summarize the challenge in promoting Science for STI Policy in Japan.
