<Outline>
Kei Koizumi, recently a deputy research minister and deputy science advisor of the United States in the President Biden administration, will offer a portrait of the current U.S. science, technology, and innovation (STI) policy system based on STI policy topics that have been of particular concern for Japanese STI policy: U.S. government R&D funding, research security, open science and public access, international S&T cooperation by U.S. researchers and their foreign colleagues, regional innovation policies, mission-oriented research, and other topics. The ongoing dismantling of many of these policies by the current U.S. administration is
perilous not only to the U.S. community but also the global STI community. The speaker will offer insights into recent U.S. STI policy, including discussion of U.S. policy initiatives such as the CHIPS and Science Act that remain in force, but also research and visioning opportunities for STI researchers to contribute to a reimagination of global STI policies within a changed and changing STI enterprise.
