Outline:
Many central banks around the world are exploring central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).  Its motivation differs across jurisdictions, but approaches of most central banks tend to be macroeconomic, aiming to enhance payments inclusion and efficiency, as well as ensure competition, privacy and the integrity of their payment system.  This seminar covers, starting with basics of money and CBDC then referring to the global landscape of CBDC explorations, characteristics and possible policy challenges of retail payments market in Japan, roles expected for a possible CBDC, its technical challenges and design considerations.
