概要

The growing strategic partnership between India and Japan is among the most closely watched developments in Asia today. Yet progress beyond the level of rhetoric has been slow and plagued by weak institutionalization of cooperation and an inability to capitalize on the potential complementarity of interests between the two countries. The present moment offers an important opportunity to take stock of the relationship and chart a course for future progress. The speakers have recently edited a volume titled Poised for Partnership: Deepening India-Japan Relations in the Asian Century (Oxford University Press, 2016), in which they assembled a group of Japanese and Indian experts to consider four major aspects of the bilateral relationship: economics, energy, security, and global governance. The speakers will present the findings of this volume and discuss the broader trajectory of Japan-India relations in the 21st century. Beginning with an overview of the relationship's strategic underpinnings, they will discuss the respective interests of Japan and India in each of the four areas, the extent to which Japan and India have been able to achieve their respective interests, and the role that each can play in the other's grand strategy going forward.
